Community detection as an inference problem.

We express community detection as an inference problem of determining the most likely arrangement of communities. We then apply belief propagation and mean-field theory to this problem, and show that this leads to fast, accurate algorithms for community detection.

Perception as an Inference Problem

Although the idea of thinking of perception as in inference problem goes back to Helmholtz, it is only recently that we have seen the emergence of neural models of perception that embrace this idea. Here I describe why inferential computations are necessary for perception, and how they go beyond traditional computational approaches based on deductive processes such as feature detection and clas...

Multiparty Split - Ticket Voting Estimation as an Ecological Inference Problem ∗

The estimation of vote splitting in mixed-member electoral systems is a common problem in electoral studies, where the goal of researchers is to estimate individual voter transitions between parties on two different ballots cast simultaneously. Because the ballots are cast separately and secretly, however, voter choice on the two ballots must be recreated from separately tabulated aggregate dat...

Is There an Inference Problem?

This chapter investigates the threat of unwanted inferences in Semantic Web data. We survey the current efforts to detect and remove unwanted inferences, identify research gaps, and recommend future research directions. We begin with a brief overview of Semantic Web technologies and reasoning methods, followed by the description of the inference problem in traditional databases. In the context ...

Missing data as a causal inference problem

We address the problem of deciding whether there exists an unbiased estimator of a given relation Q, when data are missing not at random. We employ a formal representation called ‘Missingness Graphs’ to explicitly portray the causal mechanisms responsible for missingness and to encode dependencies between these mechanisms and the variables being measured. Using this representation, we define th...
